Honor Flight Walk!
Honor Flights Walk!
Stars and Stripes Honor Flights is an organization working on getting all World War II veterans out to Washington, D.C. to see the World War II memorial, at no cost to the veterans themselves. The problem is that it costs money - $500 per veteran. However, considering these men helped save us all from the tyranny of Nazi Germany, contributing a buck or two and taking a half-hour walk is nothing. We try to teach our children to honor and respect their elders, and especially the veterans and active service people that preserve our freedom, but it's often difficult to find an activity in which our students can get involved that truly expresses our gratitude. Helping a veteran travel across the country to experience a memorial honoring his fight for freedom before ... time runs out, well, that means something.
A deep, sincere "Thank You" to all our veterans, and also to CGB-MS's biggest patriot, Mrs. Mersberger, for contacting Stars and Stripes Honor Flights and organizing this event. Being a seventh grade teacher, Mrs. Mersberger has the seventh graders participate in the fund-raising and the walk. The students had the honor of walking with veterans Marvin (Stormy) Soerens and Gordon Moen this year. A small number of eighth graders also raised money, and joined in the walk on a glorious fall day on October 21, 2011. Eighth graders Kaylee and Kaitlyn took a mountain of wonderful photographs. Here they are.
